General Information for Producers (Agents)

The Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB) licenses and regulates producers within the District of Columbia to protect consumers from unfair practices. Both individuals and agencies/firms may apply for a producer’s license. DISB issues producers licenses that expire biennially on the birth month for individuals and agency/firms licenses that expire biennially on May 31. The late renewal period ends 30 days after the expiration date. If the license has an expiration date of more than 31 days, the applicant must complete the reinstatement process. Resident applicants must sit for a licensing examination, administered by Pearson Vue, DISB’s contract vendor for testing. To schedule an examination, please go to pearsonvue.com. Nonresident applicants must be licensed and in good standing in their resident state and are licensed through reciprocity. Both residents and nonresidents must apply electronically online at nipr.com.

Business Entity Appointments – A Business Entity (BE) which is appointed with an insurer is not required by the District to appoint Designated Responsible Licensed Producers (DRLP) to represent the insurer unless commissions are paid directly to these individuals. If commissions are paid directly to the BE then an appointment is required for the entity only.
