DISR Encourages District Residents to "Get Smart" about Their Insurance Coverage

(Washington, DC) According to a recent survey by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), most Americans feel they have about the right amount of insurance coverage (67 percent). However, only 28 percent say they understand the details of the coverage "very well."

When it comes to insurance, knowledge is your best policy. That’s why the District of Columbia Department of Insurance and Securities Regulation (DISR) is encouraging consumers to get smart about their coverage during Get Smart Week, January 14–18, 2002.

During Get Smart Week, District residents are urged to call the Get Smart Hotline toll free at 1-866-SMARTWEEK, visit the Get Smart area of DISR's website or contact DISR at (202) 727-8000 to request a free brochure about becoming smarter insurance consumers.

"Get Smart Week isn’t about selling or canceling policies," says DISR Commissioner Lawrence H. Mirel. "It’s about making sure your family is properly covered. We believe DISR is your best resource for insurance-related questions and concerns. Get Smart Week is the perfect opportunity for us to connect with consumers and encourage them to get smart about their coverage."

The DC Department of Insurance and Securities Regulation (DISR) has two missions, (1) to provide fair, efficient and fast regulatory supervision of the insurance and securities businesses for the protection of the people of the District of Columbia, and (2) to create conditions that will retain and attract national and international insurance and other financial businesses to the District.
