DC Department of Insurance & Securities Regulation Marks 100 Year Anniversary

Washington, DC - The DC Department of Insurance and Securities Regulation marked the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Office of Superintendent for the District of Columbia on March 7, 2001 with open house and reception at the department.

Congress created the Office of the Superintendent for the District of Columbia on March 3, 1901. In 1997 the Council passed a law creating the District of Columbia Department of Insurance and Securities Regulation (DISR) as a separate agency.

The event was an occasion to celebrate the department’s history and to highlight DISR’s progress and goals for the future. DC Insurance Commissioner Lawrence H. Mirel paid a special tribute to the five former commissioners that were present: Edward Lombard, James Montgomery, Marguerite Stokes, Robert Willis, and Patrick Kelly.

Commissioner Lawrence H. Mirel was appointed by Mayor Anthony Williams in 1999, and has since established two missions for DISR: (1) to provide fair, efficient and fast regulatory supervision of insurance and securities businesses for the protection of the people of the District of Columbia, and (2) to create conditions that will retain and attract national and international insurance and other financial businesses to the District of Columbia.
