Theodore Miles Appointed Securities Bureau Director
Washington, DC - DC Insurance and Securities Commissioner Lawrence H. Mirel announced the appointment of Theodore A. Miles as Director of the Securities Bureau for the DC Department of Insurance and Securities Regulation (DISR). "Mr. Miles brings top level regulatory experience and broad knowledge of securities regulation that will be a tremendous asset to the department," said Commissioner Mirel. "With the recent approval by the DC City Council of the new Securities Act, DISR will become more active in the securities area. Mr. Miles will be instrumental in seeing that this law is fairly and efficiently implemented, as well as promoting the District's mission of becoming a leader in the national and international financial industry," said Mirel.
Mr. Miles came to DISR from the National Science Foundation, where he was the Deputy General Counsel. Immediately prior to going to the National Science Foundation, he was Vice President for Legal Affairs and Corporate Secretary of National Public Radio. Mr. Miles has held senior legal positions in various federal regulatory agencies, including the Division of Trading and Markets of the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Economic Regulatory Administration of the U.S. Department of Energy and the Federal Power Commission (now the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission). In addition, Mr. Miles has taught corporations and other securities-related courses at Howard University School of Law for more than twenty years. Mr. Miles is a former member of the Administrative Conference of the United States and is a volunteer mediator with the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. He was the first law clerk for U.S. District Judge (later Chief Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit) Spottswood W. Robinson, III.
Mr. Miles is a member of the Bar of the District of Columbia and a graduate of Harvard College and a cum laude graduate of Howard University School of Law. A fourth generation Washingtonian, he attended Banneker Jr. High School in Washington, DC before going to Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire.
The DC Department of Insurance and Securities Regulation (DISR) has two missions, (1) to provide fair, efficient and fast regulatory supervision of the insurance and securities businesses for the protection of the people of the District of Columbia, and (2) to create conditions that will retain and attract national and international insurance and other financial businesses to the District. |
